Pathfinder Encounter CR Calculator
Calculate the effective Challenge Rating (CR) of a Pathfinder 1e encounter and determine its difficulty for your party.
Formula
Step 1 – Adjusted Party Level (APL):
APL = Average Party Level
If party size ≥ 6: APL += 1
If party size ≤ 2: APL -= 1
Step 2 – Total Encounter XP:
Total XP = Σ (Number of Monsteri × XP(CRi))
where XP(CR) is the standard Pathfinder XP value for that CR (e.g., CR 5 = 1,600 XP).
Step 3 – Encounter CR:
Encounter CR = CR whose XP value is closest to Total Encounter XP
(e.g., 3,200 XP ≈ CR 7)
Step 4 – Difficulty:
Compare Total XP to the XP thresholds for the APL from Pathfinder Table 12-2:
Easy (APL−1), Average (APL), Challenging (APL+1), Hard (APL+2), Epic (APL+3+)
Step 5 – XP per PC:
XP per PC = Total Encounter XP ÷ Party Size
